What is a Doula?
A doula is a labor support professional that assists you to make informed decisions and provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, and non-clinical advice. A doula does not make decisions for you, however, she helps you to weigh the options, understand the pros and cons of each choice, and make the right decision for you, your baby, and your family. While not being a medically trained doctor, midwife, or nurse, a doula will help guide you towards the birth you desire, and is a calming presence throughout the entire birth process. By giving you evidence based materials and an understanding of typical birth interventions before they happen, a doula is there to help support you throughout your birth.
Is a doula right for you?
Whether you are going to be a first time mother, have had poor birthing experiences in the past and hope never to repeat them, have fears pertinent to birth, or simply want a friendly presence throughout birth, a doula could be right for you! According to Evidence Based Birth, women working with a doula see a 39% decrease in Cesarean births, a 31% decrease in mother dissatisfaction with the birth experience, and a decrease in the length of labor for an average of over 40 minutes. A doula can help you achieve the birth you desire.
